Summer, Screens & ADHD Teens
Instead of war over screens, consider different types of boundaries this summer
Has this ever happened to you?
School is out for summer and suddenly everything feels lighter: no early alarms, no school stress, no last-minute homework reminders.
For a moment, it feels like freedom…
But soon, the shift hits hard: your ADHD tween or teen is glued to screens for hours, up late watching videos and pushing back on every limit you try to set.
You mention taking away the Xbox or iPad, and suddenly you're in a full-blown argument, (before you’ve even had coffee)!
Here’s the thing: screens aren’t just a fun escape for ADHD brains. They’re a source of stimulation, predictability and relief. When summer lacks structure, those devices can become the only thing that feels good to their nervous system.
This doesn’t mean you have to allow unlimited screen time. But, facts are facts, the usual rules and routines might not cut it right now.
You don’t need to go to war over screens. Perhaps a better option is to create, with your chi'ld’s input, structure with choice, clear boundaries and moments of real connection.
Try a plan to supports the way your child’s brain actually functions:
Ask what else lights them up
Create a daily rhythm instead of rigid rules
Offer alternatives that don’t overwhelm
This isn’t about being the perfect parent. It’s about finding what works for your unique kid — and knowing you don’t have to figure it out on your own.
