Autism Spectrum
Assessment Details
Being gifted with a brain on the autism spectrum means your child's brain is a complex neurotype. This complexity can make signs of autism hard to spot as they are unique to each individual.
Often loved ones will notice behavioural patterns that are different from their child's peers early on, usually surfacing between ages 2-3. As demands in life increase, however, these patterns can become more prominent and easily recognizable.
Some common signs we see in autistic children and adults include:
challenges with communication and social interaction
repetitive behaviour patterns
intense interests in specific topics and/or activities
difficulty coping with changes in routine or environment
challenges with focus, organization, reading, spelling and/or writing
difficulty with tasks involving attention, memory and/or problem-solving
anxiety, low mood, strong emotional reactions
Autistic brains operate differently than neurotypical brains. Understanding the strengths of this neurotype as early as possible will set your child on the right path for a lifetime of success.
What it Does
If your child or teen’s social, communication, behavioural and/or academic development is different from their peers an ASD assessment can help find effective support strategies.
Avery provides personalized, evidence-based ASD assessments for students ages 5 to 17 years. This assessment will be your documented advocacy to ensure your child has maximum access to the supports available during their academic journey.
Combined ASD/Psycho-educational Assessment
In addition to a comprehensive diagnostic summary, a psycho-educational assessment generates two additional documents: an Instructional Support Plan (ISP) and an Individualized Program Plan (IPP).
These documents are mandatory in Alberta for a student to receive individual and specialized support that is independent of what their teacher provides. These living documents outline specific goals, strategies, and accommodations and are developed collaboratively by the school team, parents, and the student as they progress.
Getting Started
At Avery, an assessment isn't a "test." It's a chance to learn about your child, their strengths, struggles, and goals.
The assessment journey starts with a consultation to discuss your concerns. The consultation lasts 30 minutes.
After we have assessed the best path forward we will set up the first session.

FAQ
-
We are big believers in completing an assessment as soon as your child exhibits signs such as:
chronic headaches and/or stomach aches before and at school
school avoidance and refusal
unexpected academic underachievement
reports from the school that your child is struggling, etc.
The traditional “wait to fail” model tells parents to wait until grade 3 to complete an assessment. The justification is to allow time for further cognitive development.
However, this model forces children to ram into unnecessary, and often distressing, obstacles for 3-5 years (or more) before supporting them.
By that age this lack of appropriate support often leads to a child developing secondary mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression. This significantly impacts their ability to function or achieve academic success in a system that was not made with them in mind.
-
No. Your child does not need a referral from a doctor, school, or psychologist for this assessment.

The type of help your child gets depends on the assessment results, your choices, and those of your child's school and division.

Insurance & Employer Benefits
Many private or employer health plans offer coverage for psychology and assessment services.
Reach out to your insurer to find out about Psycho-Educational Assessment coverage.
If your insurance won't cover Psycho-Educational Assessment, you may claim it as a medical expense on your income tax.
We strive to keep our fees similar to those of other providers in Calgary. Cost shouldn’t stop your child from getting help.
We can discuss payment options during the consultation. -
Avery assessments are completed privately so you are under no obligation to provide your child’s school with a copy of the report.
However, if you would like the school to provide accommodations for your child’s individual needs, you will likely need to provide the report to the school. The report will help your child’s school understand how to best support them.
-
The purpose of this assessment is to provide a custom care manual for your child. We encourage you to have honest, age-appropriate talks with them. Talk about the assessment's purpose: it helps adults, like parents and teachers, offer the right support.
Understood.org has excellent conversation starters to get the ball rolling.
-
The ASD assessment is designed to provide documented advocacy for your child’s specific needs.
However, whether your child receives help and what type of help they receives depends on the results of the assessment and the decisions of the school and the school division.
-
Shared or joint custody: Both parents must agree to an assessment for their child.
